An Enjoyable, Classic Romp
Shovel Knight banks on nostalgia in many ways, but thankfully doesn't limit it. It has many unique mechanics and some of the most excellent level design of its genre, surpassing a mere nostalgia trip and becoming an excellent game in its own right.
Ultimately this also means it does little to distinguish itself, so I felt unable to give it a perfect score, but it's a really fun and suitably difficult game that gives a good many hours of challenging entertainment.
