Thimbleweed Park gets better the further into it you go.
I knew Thimbleweed Park had a retro style to it when I started, but I was still surprised by how much it exactly replicated the old SCUMM graphic adventure style. It really looks and plays like a game from the late '80s or early '90s. The devs made the most of the pixelated graphics, though. It looks better than any actual game from that era.
Very little was done to modernize the game mechanics. It's clunky to play with a controller, having been originally designed for mouse and keyboard. After a while, I figured out buttons I could use to streamline navigation. Some tips during the first few minutes would have helped, instead of leaving me to hunt for shortcuts out of mild frustration.
The story is excellent and gets deeper as you progress. If you make through the first couple parts, you'll probably be hooked enough to finish the game. The characters are fleshed out and diverse. There are lots of genre references--it feels like a love letter to classic graphic adventures.
