*Warning: Spoilers* Fantastic game with great action and a glorious soundtrack
Back as a kid, I rented Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project and never finished it. Later, I bought the game and also never finished it. That changed this year. After all those years, I was determined to finish it.
Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project is a side scroller in which you progress through 8 episodes with three stages each. The story is a classic villain – hero one in which you need to stop the evil doctor Morphix from turning all life into hideous mutants. You need to destroy factories, supply lines and eventually fight Morphix in Space. Every chapter consists of three levels, in which the third level ends with a boss fight.
The gameplay is very simple. You scroll right, while shooting mutates pigs, alligators, bugs and rats, pick up ammo, health and Nukes, which increase your stats wen you collect 10 of them. All stages all full of alternate paths and secrets, which adds to the exploring factor. In each level, you rescue a babe and collect a keycard to open the exit.
The environments change when progressing further. First you are on the rooftops, then you are in Chinatown, followed by sewers, subway stations and the factory of Morphix himself. After that you are on a oil rig and ends, of course, in space.
The humor is spot on; Dukes commentary and voice acting is in line with his other games and is sometimes hilarious. The hidden little easter eggs like taking a piss, collecting a soda from the soda machine to increase your ego and the little bugs you can stomp on adds to the experience.
Graphicly, this game is all right, even for the time. Nothing screams more 90’s than the graphical design of this game.
What sets it apart is the sound. My God is it good. The gunfire sounds, the enemy grunts, the environmental sound, it is all great. But the absolute best parts are the soundtracks. It is loud, it is metal, and it really gets you pumped up. This is one of those games that deserve this kind of sound.
The only slight problem with this game is the visibility when moving forward. Many enemies can shoot at you, and sometimes, you cannot see the enemy yet and he pumps your ass full of lead before you can even react.
Overall, I thought Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project is a great game that deserves a sequel or a remake and I am proud that I finally managed to finish it.
