Amnesia:Isolation
For this installment in the Amnesia series, Frictional Games have tried something different. There is much more to the gameplay than in any of their previous games.
The game basically consists of trips from your base into the depths of the bunker. Each trip could result in your death at the claws of the beast and since you can only save at the base, you better come prepared. This time, you have the ability to actually fight the monster and drive it off for a while if you get attacked. In this regard, the game reminds me of Alien:Isolation.
Choosing the right equipment is critical, since your inventory space is very limited. Do you take some grenades and molotoves with you, or rather some healing items? Or is it better to try your luck with empty inventory and hope that you can sneak around the beast and bring back more valuable resources?
While the gameplay is really fun, I think the story is on the weaker side this time. It's not bad, but it just didn't feel as interesting as in the older games. The same goes for the atmosphere, it's not as scary, maybe because the monster can be fought. I'm also not a huge fan of the backtracking and the time pressure caused by the fuel in the generator. It felt like I was being constantly rushed.
Overall, it's a solid horror game, but it's missing something that made the other games stand out for me. I really hope the developers will create another Amnesia game where they combine some of the game elements from Bunker with the Lovecraftian atmosphere of the previous games.
